What does painting in Little Bay involve?
Little Bay started as a sanitation camp during the 1881-82 smallpox outbreak. The Coast Hospital that grew out of it became Prince Henry Hospital in 1934, services moved to Prince of Wales in 2001, and the land was released for housing. Nineteen heritage buildings from the hospital years remain on the site, the Prince Henry Site at 1430 Anzac Parade is heritage listed, and Randwick City Council maps a Prince Henry Hospital heritage conservation area over it. The housing built since is mostly attached: at the 2021 Census 55.2% of 1,857 occupied private dwellings were flats and 15.5% were semi-detached or townhouses.
That gives us two very different jobs in one suburb. Inside the conservation area, colour and any external change should be checked with council before work starts. On the newer stages it is acrylic render, fibre cement and Colorbond reaching a first or second recoat on an exposed headland, where render holds salt and the sealant joints in cladding go before the paint film does.
