Painting in Chifley
Chifley is a family-oriented suburb undergoing significant renewal. The original postwar housing stock, modest single-storey homes from the 1950s and 1960s, is steadily being demolished and replaced with larger double-storey family homes. This creates strong demand for new-build painting as well as full exterior repaints for the remaining original homes. Modern replacement homes tend to feature rendered exteriors with contemporary colour schemes, while the older houses often have original paint systems that are well past their lifespan. The suburb is relatively sheltered from direct salt air compared to neighbouring Malabar and La Perouse, but still sits within the coastal zone where exterior finishes need to be durable.
On the ground in Chifley
What does painting a house in Chifley involve?
Chifley was only separated from southern Matraville in 1964 and named for the wartime prime minister. Most of the land was Crown land leased to individuals through the Depression, so the early houses went up slowly and piecemeal, and in the 1960s a public housing complex of four and five storey blocks and bedsit flats was added. The suburb has stayed low-rise since: at the 2021 Census 58.8% of 1,151 occupied private dwellings were separate houses and 25.4% were semi-detached, with only 16.2% flats and 33.4% owned outright.
Households here average 2.9 people, among the largest in the suburbs we cover, so interiors get hard use and get painted while the family is still in the house. We work a room or two at a time and keep the kitchen and a bathroom live. On the surviving 1950s and 60s houses, door and window trim is often old oil-based enamel that needs sanding and a bonding primer before a waterborne enamel will hold.
