What does painting a home in Malabar involve?
Malabar took its name in 1933 from the MV Malabar, wrecked on the northern headland of Long Bay in 1931. Before that it was the Village of Brand, proclaimed in 1899, and it only really grew once the tram reached the Coast Hospital in 1901. Randwick City Council maps a Malabar Headland heritage conservation area along the northern boundary, next to the wartime Malabar Battery. Housing has stayed low and owner-held: at the 2021 Census 61.8% of 1,333 occupied private dwellings were separate houses, 25.5% were flats, and 36.1% were owned outright, the highest outright ownership of the suburbs we cover.
Long Bay opens to the south-east, so the front elevations on the streets running down to it take the weather head on. Salt sits on render and steel long before anyone notices it, which is why every exterior here starts with a proper wash down rather than a dust off, and why window frames, garage doors, balustrades and gutters need attention on a shorter cycle than the walls do.
