La Perouse, known as Gooriwal, holds one of Sydney’s longest-established Aboriginal communities. An Aboriginal reserve was in place here by 1885, and in 1984 the La Perouse Local Aboriginal Land Council was given title to the reserve and adjacent land under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983. The Mission Church stands at 46 Adina Avenue, Bare Island Fort guards the entrance to Botany Bay, and the Chinese Market Gardens at 1-39 Bunnerong Road are heritage listed. It is a small suburb: at the 2021 Census there were just 116 occupied private dwellings, 82.8% of them separate houses.
Randwick City Council also maps a Botany Bay National Park heritage conservation area over the headland, so heritage advice comes before colour choices on anything listed. Physically this is the most exposed ground we work on. Salt-laden south-easterlies come straight off the bay and the open ocean, so washing down, treating rust at fixings and resealing window heads matter more here than the topcoat does.
