What does painting in Hillsdale involve?
Hillsdale was cut out of Matraville in 1961. Botany Council wanted to call it Gilmore, was told the name was taken, and settled on Hillsdale after the state local government minister Patrick Darcy Hills. The post-war flats built around Bunnerong and Beauchamp Roads still define the suburb, with Southpoint adding a mixed-use high-rise on Bunnerong Road opposite Heffron Park. The numbers are stark: at the 2021 Census 2,009 of 2,287 occupied private dwellings, 87.8%, were flats or apartments, just 96 were separate houses, and 55.2% were rented.
Almost everything we paint here is therefore either a lot interior or common property in a walk-up. On the older blocks that means painted face brick and render, tiled stair nosings and terrazzo to cut in against, steel balustrades and hollow entry doors, and letterbox and bin store walls that take the most punishment. Hillsdale sits in the Bayside local government area, so heritage rules here come from Bayside Council rather than Randwick.
