Mascot has transformed rapidly from an industrial suburb to one of Sydney's most active residential development zones. What does painting a home in Mascot involve?
Mascot was the municipality of North Botany until a 1911 referendum, and only took its current name because the postal authorities knocked back Ascot, after the racecourse that once stood where the airport is. Two Mascots now paint very differently: the towers that have gone up around Mascot station and Coward Street since the 2000s, and the older market garden era streets off Botany Road. At the 2021 Census 6,026 of 8,105 occupied private dwellings, 74.3%, were flats or apartments, only 3.9% were semi-detached, and 56.7% were rented.
In the towers the limits are logistical rather than technical: lift bookings, loading dock windows, resident notices and by-laws set the program. On the older cottages, Bayside Council points out that clause 5.10(3) of the Bayside Local Environmental Plan 2021 lets some minor work proceed without consent, including painting a residential building in a colour scheme devised by the council heritage advisor, whose advice is free.
